WHAT IS EMERALD EMPIRE SPORTS CAR CLUB?
Our club is comprised of members with all types of cars who associate for one common interest – they enjoy getting out and driving! If you're into more than "show and shine", this club is for you. Of course we appreciate good looking cars, and tend to pamper ours also.
We get as much enjoyment out of planning and putting on an event as we do participating in it. Rather than keeping the sport to ourselves, we hope that you will join us and share in the fun. If you love driving your car, want to participate in the various motorsports we offer, and are willing to pitch in, we welcome you.
Perhaps you've sat at the edge of a track and yearned for a chance at the action. But out there are experienced drivers and lots of expensive machinery! That chance to drive quickly and even win a trophy is not that far off. Autocrossing, (auto-x) or Solo as it is called by the Sports Car Club of America, is a medium speed, skill driving event held on large parking lots. It is for the driver whose "race car" may also be his daily driver. The course is generally laid out with traffic cones – lots of corners with a few straights. Only one car at a time competes and the object is to achieve the fastest time through the course. There is a class for just about every type of car and level of preparation. These events are held on weekends all over the country. Our club holds at least 8 of these events each year.
There are also at least 6 other clubs in Oregon alone that holds these events too.
Have you ever driven up a winding mountain road that was so much fun that you wished you had the road all to yourself, and drive the way you would like? Try hillclimbing! Several clubs in the northwest have turned that dream into reality. From northern California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, there are at least 6 hillclimbs from June through September. These are weekend events. Classes are similar to autocrossing, but the safety requirements are stricter. Hillclimbs are not for novices, and require a certain amount of racing or autocross experience. In July our club sponsors the Larison Rock Hillclimb, on a paved winding mountain road outside of Oakridge.
We have members who spend many of their weekends road-racing on tracks throughout the west such as Portland International Raceway, Laguna Seca, Oregon Raceway Park, and The Ridge Raceway in the Lucky Dog Series and 24 Hours of Lemons Racing. We also have several members actively involved in the local dirt-track series - Hornet Racing. If you are interested in learning more about any of this, we can direct you to the right people. We have members who spend many of their weekends road-racing on tracks throughout the west such as Portland International Raceway, Laguna Seca, Oregon Raceway Park, and The Ridge Raceway in the Lucky Dog Series and 24 Hours of Lemons Racing. Recently we revived the rally program and began holding one TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) Rally usually in late spring. This is where a driver and navigator are given a set of instructions about where to drive, and have to rely on street signs along the route to find their way. These are not races and are held on city streets and roads. Finding your way correctly, stopping at checkpoints along the way, and driving the exact speed indicated in the instructions will yield a good result…times are calculated to the hundredth of a minute. Fun times! We also have info on other rallying clubs in the northwest.
We hope that you find yourself among friends when you are at one of our events. We enjoy bringing family and friends together for some fun behind the wheel. Our many activities encourage family fun. We donate a portion of our proceeds to FOOD FOR LANE COUNTY, The Oakridge Volunteer Fire Department, Candlelighters, Guide Dogs For the Blind, and other charities. Our club also participates in Oregon's Adopt-A-Highway Program with our own section of road on Hwy 58 that we clean 3 times yearly.
